Just southeast of Oakland is the small city of San Leandro. The city runs from the San Francisco Bay on the southwest, up into the East Bay foothills to the east. It’s a great commute location, being served by three freeways, two BART stations, as well as the nearby Oakland International Airport. The City hosts many events and festivals throughout the year such as the Cherry Festival and parade in the spring and the Sausage and Suds food and music festival in the fall. With a diverse population of around 86,000, there is a wide variety of housing and neighborhoods to choose from. The City has a growing cluster of craft beer makers and suppliers along with high-tech businesses. There is a free, publicly accessible WiFi system throughout the downtown area.
Most of the homes from downtown east to the hills were built from the 1920’s to the 1950’s. The styles include craftsman, bungalows, Spanish Revivals, Tudor, California Ranch and the occasional Eichler Home. These charming neighborhoods include, Broadmoor, Farrelly Pond , Estudillo Estates and Bay O Vista. Here you’ll find good restaurants such as Paradiso and CreAsian along with great, locally owned cafés such as Zocalo and Sabino’s.There are also many family business such as Galvan’s Market and Estudillo Produce.
The western neighborhoods include Washington Manor, Mulford Gardens, Heron Bay, Marina Vista and Marina Faire. Here you will find a sailing marina, the southernmost marina in the East Bay as well as the popular Monarch Bay Golf Club. While you will find the occasional Victoria home here, most of the housing was built between the 1950’s and late 1990’s with both single family homes and condominiums. The San Francisco Bay Trail runs along here.
The southern part of the city is dominated by Bay Fair Mall a modest shopping and movie theater complex. The neighborhoods here include Floresta Gardens, Bradrick, and Cherryland. The housing runs from smaller, older, 2 and 3 bedroom homes to apartments and some older condominiums. This area seems destined for improvement as the city is in the planning process to redevelop the area around the Bay Fair BART station as a Transit-Oriented Development. For now, you can find shopping from Macy’s to Thrift Town and restaurants from national chains such as Chili’s to local favorites like Elio’s Family Restaurant.
For recreation, the locals enjoy Bay O Vista pool and tennis club, Lake Chabot, fishing and boating, the numerous parks and the Bay Trail.
